JETBUS 2 IN THE JETBUS LINEAGE

Jetbus 2 stands as the second generation the moment when Jetbus 1’s design language was not only continued, but refined to be cleaner, more modern, and ready to evolve into future variants.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

DESIGN SCOPE:
DEFINING THE FRONT AND REAR IDENTITY

In this project, I worked with Adi Putro’s internal team focusing on the two most defining areas: the front face and the rear signature. These are the strongest “identity points”—the first impression up front and the most recognizable presence from a distance.

Jetbus 2 presents a modern, premium front character, enhanced by aerodynamic surfacing that makes the form feel lighter and more futuristic. The dominant windshield and clean front composition create a bold, instantly recognizable identity strengthening the Jetbus signature at first sight on the road.

The rear design focuses on stability and visual width making the bus feel planted and confident. Panel rhythm and surface breaks are controlled to keep the Jetbus 2’s headlamps create the impression of a smiling face with lines that connect, angle, and flow, delivering a friendly expression while still feeling fast and dynamic. This “smile” character later became a design benchmark, influencing the evolution of the Jetbus design language across subsequent generations.

The composition feels distinctly automotive: not merely large lamp units as components, but lighting as a design expression building an identity that remains recognizable even through silhouette and light signature alone.

DNA EVOLUTION FROM JETBUS 1

Jetbus 2 carries forward Jetbus 1’s DNA with a noticeably refined execution. Its front bumper design evolves from Jetbus 1’s theme, reworked into a cleaner and more contemporary form. The center DRL element is now designed to blend more seamlessly into the left and right headlamps, creating a more unified front face and a stronger visual signature.

Lighting Innovation: DRL as a Signature

For both the front and rear lamps, we took a practical yet forward-looking approach: using market-available lamp bases from a Chinese lighting supplier, then modifying them by adding a DRL variation to create a distinctive signature lighting.

At the time, this was a real breakthrough because DRL usage with this character had not been applied to buses before. To my knowledge, even the lighting manufacturer in China had never produced this DRL configuration prior to our development. This innovation helped introduce a more modern “light language” into the bus design landscape.

Over time, the value of signature DRL became clear: today, it has been widely adopted by modern buses both domestically and internationally, turning lighting into more than a function, but a recognizable visual identity day or night.

Rear Character: Bold, Clean, and Memorable

The rear prioritizes clean surfaces with a clear composition: large calm volumes paired with strong lighting elements. The result is a “departure signature”—easy to recognize as the coach moves away.

Headlamp “Smiling Character”: Sharp, Compact, and Speed-Oriented

Jetbus 2 is not only about changing shapes—it is about building a repeatable system: an identity that can be replicated, developed, and still read as one design family—setting the foundation for the next Jetbus generations.
